August 19, 1941 - July 30, 2025
Birmingham, Alabama - Peter Herring sadly departed this life on July 30, 2025. He is predeceased by his parents, Dr. John Herring and Jane Herring, his wife, Judith Weaver Herring, and his son John Stephen Herring. He is survived by his daughter, Margaret Herring Fenton (Bill) and his brother, Steve Herring (Georgia) of Black Mountain, North Carolina as well as four loving nieces.
Peter was born in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1941 and carried a love for that city all his life. He graduated from Shades Valley High School in Birmingham, Alabama, then attended Tulane University in the early nineteen-sixties where he received his B.A. in Political Science. After the shortest stint in law school ever, he enrolled in the Tulane University School of Social Work and earned his M.S.W. in 1969. He became the Director of The Gulf Coast Family Counseling Agency in 1975 and held that position for fourteen years before going into private practice. He raised his family in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. Hurricane Katrina ended his time on the coast, and he subsequently lived in Virginia, Tennessee, and finally in Birmingham, Alabama, with his children who adored him.
Peter loved many things, especially helping people. He loved Shakespeare, British history, and the great outdoors. He traveled throughout Europe and the Caribbean where he enjoyed hiking and SCUBA diving. You could usually find him enjoying an ice-cold Corona Light after an enjoyable dive with the tropical fish.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Regency Retirement Village's Pathways Memory Care Unit as well as The Oaks on Parkwood's Skilled Nursing staff. Additional thanks go to the Palliative Care Team of Brookwood Baptist Hospital, the staff of 7 Main at Brookwood, and Aveanna Hospice.
Home has always been Ocean Springs, Mississippi, so a memorial service will be held there. Peter would have hated a formal service at a funeral home, so his service will be at Eat Drink Love/701 Craft at 701 Bienville Blvd. Ocean Springs at 3 p.m. The service will be on August 19, which would have been his 84th birthday. The family requests that everyone dress VERY casually (shorts and t-shirts, y'all) and wear purple in honor of Peter. It was his favorite color and is the color of royalty, after all. A private burial will follow at Live Oak Cemetery in Pass Christian. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Tulane School of Social Work or The Coral Reef Alliance online at https://www.coralreefalliance.org/.

As in a soul remembering my good friends."
