On a rainy Saturday, January 10, 2026, the world grieved the passing of Rochelle Prescott Anderson of Birmingham, Alabama. At the stately age of 85, with too much joy and life yet still to live, she passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family. She was preceded in death by the love of her life, Marlin Houston Anderson, Jr. of Montgomery, Alabama (Coosada to be precise). She is survived by her four sons and her daughters(-in-law): Marlin (Marty) H. Anderson, III and Angela of Perdido Key, Florida; Michael (Mick) P. Anderson and Kathy of Nashville, Tennessee; Marshall A. Anderson and Lili of Birmingham, Alabama; And Ronald (Ron) P. Anderson and Jamie of Madisonville, Kentucky; and her ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren: Austin, Kate, Atlas and Aurelia Anderson; Laurel and Bryan Headen; Allen Anderson; Alex Anderson and Drew Anderson; Jude Anderson and Elizabeth Anderson; Ashley Densmore; Mikayla Johnson, Kane and Myla Diffenderfer; Dylan, Dornecia and Fenix Johnson. She is also survived by her oldest brother Benjamin Prescott and his wife Linda of Sarasota, Florida as well as her sisters-in-law Doris Johnson of Folkston, Georgia; Julia Andrews of Trussville, Alabama; and Virginia Anderson of Montgomery, Alabama.
The daughter of Benjamin Prescott and Virginia Roche Prescott, Rochelle (or ‘Grandy' as her family and friends referred to her with great affection) was raised in Norwood and a graduate of Phillips High School in downtown Birmingham. She attended university at Huntingdon College in Montgomery where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in psychology and sociology. This is also where she met Marlin. She was a faithful member of the Methodist church, attending the First Methodist Churches of Montgomery, Birmingham and Hopkinsville, Kentucky. She worked for much of her life, as a daughter, wife, mother but also as a social worker, living out her belief that her faith should lead her to serve others.
She and Marlin led Sunday School classes, were active in the Habitat for Humanity community, participated in mission work locally and abroad, and were advocates for several community based social services support groups, Urban Ministry and Firehouse Ministries/Firehouse Shelter of Birmingham to name just two.
Rochelle’s hobbies included travel adventures with family to exotic places in the Far East, Middle East, and Europe as well as annual road trips around the country, from the Grand Canyon to Miami to Moundville. She loved to shop and purchase things for others, and at times acquire the odd (but necessary) piece of deck furniture, end table or night stand. As she grew more mature and settled in the Crestwood neighborhood of Birmingham one of her favorite activities was hosting dinners and impromptu gatherings at her house, specifically on the front porch. “Porch Time” as it was known became her way of watching the day develop, catching up with neighbors, spending time with family, and talking to new friends as they walked by. Rochelle never met a stranger, and her yard, house and porch were welcoming to all. Food, drinks, candy and a good conversation were always readily available. Her distinct southern accent and beautiful laugh were commented upon often. She will be sorely missed by all who had the great fortune to make her acquaintance.
A visitation, service and reception will be held at First United Methodist Church of Birmingham on Saturday, January 17th beginning at 11 am. The family welcomes all who knew Rochelle to attend. In lieu of flowers (which Rochelle adored) the family also asks that you consider a donation to one of the local service organizations mentioned (Urban Ministry and Firehouse Ministries/Firehouse Shelter).
