He was born on September 22, 1935, to Arthur and Nettie Day and was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Donzel, and his grandson Tristan. He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Iracema; his sons, John and George; and his grandchildren, Camila, Catarina, Casandra, Emma, Aidan, and Nicholas.
Roland proudly answered the call to serve his country in the Korean War. Upon his return from war he graduated from Jacksonville State University, but his commitment to those who served never wavered. Guided by faith and a profound sense of duty, he devoted his life to veterans, serving as Alabama State Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Commander of VFW Post 668 in Birmingham.
As a member on the Alabama Board of Veterans Affairs, he played a central role in creating the Robert Howard Veteran’s Home in Pell City and the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spanish Fort — places where courage, sacrifice, and honor are remembered for generations.
Beyond his service to others, Roland built a successful career as an investment broker at Thomson McKinnon and shared his warmth and hospitality through his ownership of De Vinci’s Pizza in Homewood, where he welcomed all as friends.
Roland’s life was a testament to faith, compassion, and service. His spirit will live on in the veterans whose lives he touched, the community he strengthened, and the family and friends who loved him deeply.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, September 22nd at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church at 3:00 p.m. Father Joe Colotta will preside over the service.
