Susan Carter Johns entered the presence of Jesus Christ on Monday, December 22, 2025, after a brief battle with cancer. Sue was the wife of Frederick N. Johns following their marriage in 1965. During their incredible 61 years together, they had two daughters: Tracy Elizabeth Johns, who passed away in 2003, and Amy Johns Kampakis, who resides in Birmingham, Alabama.
Sue adored her grandsons, Sergei Alexander Kampakis, Carter Andrew Kampakis, and Ryan Phillip Kampakis; her granddaughter-in-law, Mary Smyth Kampakis; and her great-grandson, Harry Alexander Kampakis. Although a native of Michigan, she had lived in Tallahassee, Florida, for fifty years until relocating to Birmingham, Alabama in 2017, where she lived until her death.
After graduating from the University of Michigan, Sue taught school in Ann Arbor, Michigan, San Leandro, California, and Thomasville, Georgia. From proofreading her grandsons’ English assignments, to receiving the Teacher of the Year award during her time in Thomasville, her passion for teaching was evident to anyone who met her. Following her retirement, Sue enjoyed traveling around the world, avidly reading as a member of several book clubs, and attending movie and musical theater performances.
Sue also cherished spending time with friends at the Premier Health Club in Tallahassee and later at Lifetime Fitness in Birmingham, where she participated in indoor and water aerobics. Her family delighted in celebrating her busy and active lifestyle. She was also a devoted volunteer for many years with several organizations and was proudly honored as Volunteer of the Year for the American Cancer Society in Tallahassee, Florida.
She is survived by her husband, Fred; her daughter, Amy, and son-in-law, Harry Kampakis; and her grandchildren; Sergei and his wife, Mary, Carter and his significant-other, Abigail, and Ryan; and great-grandson, Harry. She is also survived by her brother Warren S. Carter of Clarkston, Michigan, as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Orinda “Rindi” C. Stewart of Portland, Oregon.
A private family service will be planned at a later date. She will be missed more than words can convey.
