

Christine (Chris) was active for several years in the Monroe County Republican Party, serving as a precinct committee person, working on election boards and also served as County Vice-Chairman. In 1986 she was designated Sagamore of the Wabash by Governor Robert Orr.
Christine was a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority and served as President and State Parliamentarian.
Christine and her husband, Ben worked together in real estate and owned several rental units and restored many older homes. Restoring the Showers home at 430 North Washington Street was their most rewarding project, where they also lived for 28 years. It is now a Bed and Breakfast.
Christine was one of the founding members of the Monroe County Apartment Association. She was a past president and served twenty years on the Board of Directors.
Since 1982 she was a member the Free Methodist Church. In recent years she was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene. She hosted a monthly bible study in her home and was a member of the Gideons Auxiliary.
Christine married Ben Mitchell June 24,1949, her high school sweetheart. They were married 65 years before his passing in 2014.
Her faith and family were foremost in her life.
Survivors include her son, Mark Mitchell and his wife Linda of Bloomington and daughter, Linda May Wells and husband Randy Wells of Atlanta, GA. Three granddaughters, Christina “Chrissy” McDonald and her husband Matthew of Atlanta, GA. Krista Mitchell and her husband Chris Longoria of Elizabethtown, KY and Kayla Duff and her husband Cory Duff of Madison, IN. Three great-granddaughters, Olivia May and Isla Wells McDonald. Adelaide Longoria-Mitchell. Also her sister Lois Ferree of Bloomington and nieces and nephews.
She was proceeded in death by her husband, Ben who died December 10, 2014 and her son Richard Benjamin Mitchell on April 9,1982. One brother Donald Silvers who died May 6, 2002.
The family would like to extend a special gratitude to the staff of Stonecroft Assisted Living and Hospice Southern Healthcare for the exceptional care and kindness provided to Christine.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, March 16 at 11:00 AM in Day & Deremiah-Frye Funeral Home, 4150 East Third Street, with Dr. James Hicks and Larry Ferree officiating; burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday, March 15 from 3:00 – 7:00 PM also in the funeral home.
