

James E. Umphress, 94, formerly of Bloomington, IN died on July 12, 2015 in Greenwood Health & Living, Greenwood, IN. He was born in Lawrence County, IN to the late Harley and Mildred(Allen)Umphress on June 14, 1921. He played basketball in Heltonville, Medora and Mitchell and graduated from Mitchell High School in 1939. Jim worked for Crowe Furniture Store in Bedford for 21 years. He served in the Army for 38 months in the South Pacific-Australia, New Guinea and the Philippines. He married Nellie J. Johnson in 1946. Jim began working at Indiana University in 1960. He was the Assistant Business Manager of Continuing Education of Regional Campuses, Assistant Director of Indiana University Payroll Department and Business Manager of Track & Field and the Natatorium at IUPUI at the time of his retirement in 1984. Jim is survived by his son Eric(wife Jennifer)Umphress, two grandchildren; Kelsey and Nathan Umphress, his sister Roberta Blackwell and his brother Opal “Bud”(wife Annie) Umphress. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Nellie of 58 years, his sister Wilma Umphress and a stillborn brother Wilfred. Jim was a 70 year member of the American Legion Post 33 in Bedford. He was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Bedford before moving to Bloomington and becoming a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in 1972. Visitation will held in Day & Deremiah-Frye Funeral Home, 4150 E. Third St., Bloomington, IN 47401 on Wednesday, July 15, 2015 from 4-8 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 16, 2015 at 12 noon also in the funeral home.
