Joan (Moore) McCammon, 90, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Bloomington’s Hospice House on Monday, January 10, 2022. Joan was born July 19, 1931, to Lester and Leola (McConnell) Moore. She is survived by her husband Mobie McCammon, her children and their spouses, Laura (Noelia) of Norfolk, VA., Nick (Susan) of Bloomington, and Luanne (Peggy) of Indianapolis and three grandchildren Sarah McCammon, Matthew McCammon, and Mikaela Dettinger.
Joan was raised on a farm in Kirksville, seven miles southwest of Bloomington. She was a member of Walkers Chapel United Methodist Church in Kirksville and later St. Paul United Methodist Church in Bloomington. She was a valued member of the choir, women’s group, bible study and was part of a leadership mentoring program for the United Methodist Church organization. She participated in Eastern Star. Joan was also a member of the Monroe County Retired Teachers Association.
Joan attended Kirksville School and Bloomington High School where she graduated with high academic honors. She participated in 4-H, Monroe County Fair, and Girl’s State activities. Joan played cello in the BHS orchestra. After high school, she attended and graduated from Asbury College in Kentucky with a B.S. in Elementary Education. Joan returned to Bloomington to begin teaching elementary school at Harrodsburg and continued her education at Indiana University where she completed her Master’s Degree in Elementary Education.
She was a Monroe County school teacher for 39 years where she taught several grades 1-8 in Elementary and Middle School English and was involved in developing new student focused programs in Monroe County schools. She retired as the Assistant Principal at Clear Creek Elementary School. She also participated with hundreds of fifth-graders at Indiana University’s outdoor education program at Bradford Woods. She volunteered and mentored teachers for more than ten years after she retired. It was a thrill for her to reunite with so many former students in the hospital that are now doctors and nurses.
In 1954, she married Mobie McCammon and they began building their home in Kirksville on Rockport Road. Joan and Mobie spent 67 happy years together.
Joan was very competitive and she would beat you in checkers so fast your head would spin. She also loved to play Euchre and Skip-Bo.
Joan coached girls basketball at Bloomington High School South (BHSS) and participated in women’s softball.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in Joan's name to IU Health’s Hospice House.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at St. Paul United Methodist Church; 4201 W. Third St. on Saturday, June 4 at 1:00 p.m.
