John Gilbert Byers

John G. Byers, age 100 of Bloomington, passed away Wednesday, February 12, 2020. He was born in Knox County, Indiana on June 16, 1919. The son of John Marion and Mary Elizabeth (Shipman) Byers. He was married to his longtime friend, Treva (Young) Byers. John attended school in Bloomington and graduated from Bloomington High School in 1937. John was a 50 Year Mason and belonged to Monroe Lodge #22 F&AM. He was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers. He enjoyed gardening, traveling, his family, and especially his grandchildren. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier with 36 years of service. John was an U.S. Army veteran of W.W. II serving in the 43rd Field Artillery Battalion in Europe. John is survived by his wife Treva G. Byers, his daughter Sharon (Barry) Sutherlin, of Paoli, his daughter-in-law, Lori Byers in Solsberry, his grandchildren Stephen (Heidi) Sutherlin of Bridgeport, Illinois, Mark (Clare) Sutherlin, of Manchester, Vermont, Jodi Byers and Clair Byers, both of Bloomington, John Q Byers, Ft. Collins, Colorado; his great-grandchildren, Jonathan Sutherlin, Mairi, Aoife and Isla Sutherlin; his sister, Maxine Lindsey and sister-in-law Florence Fox, his step-daughters Diane (Roy) Costello, of Bloomington, Arleen (Ronald) Peters, of Modesto, California and step-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Margaret (Routen) Byers, his son, John I. Byers, two sisters, Leona (Oscar) Weaver and Ruby Smith, two brothers, Golda (Inez) Thacker and Clovis Byers as well as his step-mother Emma Byers. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. There will be no visitation or service according to his wishes. Day and Deremiah-Frye Funeral Home; 4150 E. Third St. is in charge of arrangements.
