Karen majored in French and minored in English. She attended college at a time when liberal arts colleges were meant to be more than trade schools. She followed the dictum, “Study something that you love and see if there is some way to make money from it.”
Following graduation from DePauw, she moved to New Jersey. She made use of her study of English, teaching English at Trenton Central High School, Trenton, New Jersey. She then moved to Bloomington, Indiana and worked as a copy editor for the Indiana University Press and as a freelance editor for many years.

Karen had a house in Stonington, Maine. She spent many summers there and was very involved in the Deer Isle-Stonington Historical Society. Stonington, the lobster capital of Maine, is on an island. Karen greatly appreciated island living, the weather, the people, the pace of life there.
Karen was an avid reader of both fiction and nonfiction. Her extensive reading in French history rivaled that of many historians. She had a keen mind and an unsentimental view of the world.
