Mrs. Van Der Schans was the best first grade teacher ever.  She was always very kind and open to our ideas and creativity.  My condolences to her family.

You were my favorite teacher in elementary school at Grandview. You were always so understanding and had a way of making me invested in everything we did in class. I'm sorry I had just heard of your passing just recently. If I had known, I would have attended your service. You are and always will be my favorite teacher of all time.

I first met Kathy when she came to the Campus Children's Center to enroll Mackenzie and Will in our daycare program.  It was a delight to watch her with the children and I don't think I ever saw her without a smile and a kind word.  She will be missed by all and the world will be a little less bright without her. 

My oldest son, Justin, was the first to meet Kathy when he was in 5th grade and was a reading buddy for her 1st grade students. The following year my youngest son, Tyler, was in her class. Later, when Justin was taking education courses at Ivy Tech, he worked with Kathy and Tyler was a cadet teacher in her classroom during his senior year. Even though our middle son, Cameron, never was in her class, she always spoke to him like he was one of her students. She was just so kind and caring to all she met. She had such a light about her and will be sorely missed by all who knew her. I know she is certainly missed by all in my family! Glad we had the pleasure of knowing her for so many years. Condolences to her family. 

I am so saddened to hear about Kathy's passing.  I was in Ken's grade in high school and I knew Kathy well.  She was always so genuine and caring and fair with everyone!   I am not surprised to learn that She was such a successful teacher.  She was a born teacher.  Always ready and willing to help others, or lend a friendly ear.  My condolences to the family

Our heartfelt condolences to your family.  Kylie,  our daughter,  had a great 1st grade experience at Childs Elementary because of Kathy. We're thinking of you at this difficult time. 

Kathy was such a wonderful kind and loving person. She loved her husband and children more than anything. Her life was way too short but what a fighter she was. She will be looking down and following and guiding her family from Heaven. I am a firm believer in this.
I will not be able to attend the calling or service because I am out of town . I'll be thinking of all of you and I have you in my prayers.

Judy,  So sorry to here about Kathy  I met her on different occasions  at Child's.  She was very kind with lovely children.  My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Cheryl (San Diego, CA)  for now!

Sorry for the loss of  your loved one. She taught our daughter when she was in the first grade at Grandview Elementary.  Always had a smile on her face. In our thoughts and prayers.

Kathy and I were in the same cohort for our masters. We had the whole group, smaller working groups, and Kathy and I had each other as study partners. For that whole year I am sure we communicated every Saturday. She was a positive supporter, a balanced thinker, an editor, and friend. I can see her smile and hear her calm voice. She was an asset in education and as a friend. Her humor and kindness had no limit.


We are so sorry to hear this sad news.  We always appreciated Kathy’s positive attitude and how hard she worked for the betterment of others.  Her smile, laugh, and kind heart will be remembered by us and others.

A few years ago as I was falling asleep (I lived 2 doors north of Judy) I was wakened by what I can only call some kind of commotion, raucous rather than alarming, punctuated by the loudest and most infectious laughter I had ever heard.  It got me out of bed and up the street and by the time I strolled into Judy's back yard (where she, 2 friends, and Kathy were sitting) things had settled down.  But, once I got there and asked what was going on, Kathy started laughing again.  There is a mouse in this story somewhere, perhaps running up Kathy's leg, I can't remember.  I do remember that laugh, though, and the sense Kathy had the the world was probably weirder than we imagined and underneath strangeness was something deeply amusing, laughter-stimulating, and immensely entertaining.    Laughter is a gift beyond measure and a find place to locate a memory.  Blessings on all who knew Kathy.

Kathy is such a dear person to our family.  She was always so kind and could make us all laugh.  She gave our two children such a good foundation early on in their schooling.  We are forever blessed for knowing and loving her.  God surround you all now and in the future til we meet again.  The Serfling Family.

Oh my, I can remember hearing that contagious laugh in the halls of BHSN and just loved Kathy's spirit and light. Sorry that we didn't get to connect later in life but thanks to social media, I have been able to follow along (long distance)  to see all the love she shared with so many both at work and with her beautiful family . Rest in heaven, my friend.
