Beloved husband to Alice June (Stephenson) for 68 years lost his battle to cancer this past Tuesday, February 21, 2012 in Naples, Florida. He was surrounded by family to ease his passing including son Louis Jr., grandchildren Sara (22) and Scott (26), daughters-in-law Kathy and Susan with her husband Joe Roth. Lou’s niece, Rose Ann Richard who is a retired nurse, was a constant comfort at his side.
Born in Stilesville, Indiana on April 18, 1922 to parents Roland Cooper and Goldie Clark Cooper, Lou was one of thirteen children, including his twin sister Lois. Upon graduation, Lou enlisted as a United States Marine, where he attained the rank of Sergeant Major. After 30 years of service, he returned to Indiana to complete his college education at Indiana University. He remained active with the Indiana National Guard as a Colonel.
Lou was employed at the IU School of Education and was active with the City of Bloomington for many years. Lou became well-known as the Indiana Safe Man for more than 30 years until he recently retired this past December when he and June became snowbirds to Florida.
Lou and June have been long-time members of The First United Church in Bloomington where funeral services to celebrate his life will be held on Tuesday, February 28 at 3:00 p.m., with a coffee reception to follow. Viewing is from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church. The church is located at 2420 E. 3rd Street.
