

Thomas (Tom) McCann, 62, died Monday, February 6th, at Bell Trace Health & Living Center in Bloomington, IN. Born on October 23, 1949, in Palestine, IL, he was the son of Lester (Lee) and Waneta Irene (Smith) McCann. He married Sharon Scott in his hometown of Robinson, IL, on March 28, 1970.
Preceding Tom in death was his father, Lee McCann, grandparents Ernest and Nora McCann and James and Irene Smith, and several uncles and cousins.
Surviving are his wife, Sharon Scott McCann of Bloomington, IN; son, Shane McCann of Indianapolis, IN; daughter, Kristi McCann and her partner Shannon Gilbert of Bloomington, IN; grandson, Jacob Deboer and granddaughter, Sara Deboer of Bloomington, IN; and his mother, Waneta McCann, of the Bell Trace community in Bloomington, IN. He is also survived by brother, James (wife, Kim) McCann of Virginia Beach, VA, as well as many nieces, nephews, and other family members who will remember his calm, quiet nature and dry wit.
He was a graduate of Ivy Tech; Indiana University, with a degree in physics; and an MBA graduate of Indiana Wesleyan University. Retired in January 2010 from NSWC Crane as an engineer, he worked at both Crane and government contracting agencies within the areas of electronic warfare systems. He was a member of an electronics warfare organization known as the Old Crows Association and was a US Army veteran. He was an avid reader of history, suspense and science and enjoyed teaching history, algebra and statistics classes at Oakland City University. His greatest joys were sharing trips to the library with his grandchildren and family vacations to Mackinac Island, MI. He served as the 2011 co-chair for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s and was active in enlisting friends and family to raise funds for the Walk for many years. He also enjoyed genealogical research and travels with his wife.
Visitation and funeral service will be held at Day Funeral Home, located at 4150 E. Third Street, Bloomington, IN 47401. Visitation hours will be on Friday, February 10,2012, from 4-8 p.m. EST and Saturday, February 11, 2012, noon to 1 p.m. EST. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2012, at 1 p.m. EST, officiated by Dr. Jack Skiles of First United Church. Burial and graveside service will be at approximately 4 p.m. EST at Wheatland Cemetery, approximately 80 miles outside of Bloomington.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (www.pancan.org) or to the Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org), two organizations that Tom was passionate about for their advancement in research and support to patients and their families.
The McCann family would like to thank Dr. Eric Bannec, Dr. Jackie Joyce, Dr. Jerry Jesseph, the IU Health Bloomington Hospital oncology nursing staff, with special appreciation to the Bell Trace Health and Living staff for the compassionate care provided to the family.
