

W. Fred Chafin, age 78, of Bloomington, died Saturday evening at I.U. Health; Bloomington Hospice House. Born December 10, 1934 in Unionville, Indiana, he was the son of Robert W. and Alma (Skirvin) Chafin. He was a member of the Sherwood Oaks Christian Church where he formerly sang in the choir. He also sang with the Bloomington “Sounds of Indiana” barbershop singers. He enjoyed golf, hunting trips to Colorado and Wyoming with his son and grandsons, fishing and just being with his family, especially his grandchildren. He formerly worked for Monroe County State Bank and later was the owner and agent for the Ray Insurance Agency in Cloverdale and the Bloomington Insurance Agency in Bloomington. While living in Cloverdale, he was a member of the Cloverdale Lions Club, the Community Business Improvement Association and the New Providence Baptist Church.
He is survived by his loving wife, M. Jane (Finley) Chafin, of Bloomington; two daughters and son-in-law, Lisa Fulkerson, of Bloomington and Cheryl “Cheri” (Ralph) Landrey, of Bloomington; one son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Karen Chafin, of Bloomington; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Vernal and Jeanette Chafin, of Ellettsville and Bob and Kim Chafin, of Vincennes; three sisters and brother-in-law, Ruth Laughhunn and Donna Chafin, both of Ellettsville and Judy and Joe Landrey, of Unionville; nine grandchildren, Tommy and Billy Fulkerson, Steve, Aaron, Hanna and Rebekah Landrey and Emma, Sam and Eli Chafin. He was preceded in death by his parents.
The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Day Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Little Union Baptist Church Cemetery in Unionville. Friends may visit the family at the funeral home on Tuesday from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
