David Louis Miner passed away on February 7, 2023, at Redmond Care and Rehabilitation Center in Redmond, Washington.
David was born in Helena, MT, November 26, 1932, to Ray and Ellen Miner. The Miner family including David’s older sister Doris moved around a bit during David’s childhood. They resided in the towns of Basin and Gardiner, Montana and in Goldendale, Washington. They returned to Helena where David attended and graduated from Helena High School, class of 1950. David was a high school athlete, running track. David won the class A interscholastic mile with a time of 4:46.
While attending a high school basketball tournament in Anaconda MT, David met Rita Borzick, on Saint Patrick’s Day in 1950. They married August 1, 1953, and together raised five children. They lived in Anaconda until 1968 when the family moved to Tacoma, Washington. While the children were growing up David began his career as an iron worker at the Anaconda Smelter. The copper strike in the mid Sixties caused him to seek employment elsewhere. David drove to Chicago Illinois where he worked on the John Hancock Building. Apparently, he didn’t enjoy working 86 floors above the pavement in freezing weather so he returned to home. David and Rita made the decision to move to Tacoma, Washington. He found work at the Star Iron and Steel Company building large cranes for the shipping industry. After 25 years as an iron worker David sought a new career. He and Rita sold their home in Tacoma and moved to Chelan, Washington to open a Coast-to-Coast Hardware store. While they enjoyed the store, grandchildren called them back to Tacoma.
He was able to return to his job as an iron worker for a year before finding another Coast-to-Coast, this time in Allyn WA, close to family. David enjoyed his store; he was a talented DIY guy. He worked with his customers finding those little parts that could save an appliance or a plumbing project, and he could match paint colors, without a computer. After nine years in the hardware business David and Rita sold the store and retired in 1993.
After retirement David and Rita spent time traveling in their RV, visiting friends and family scattered in the western states. Retirement allowed him to spend more time oil painting, his lifelong passion. He was meticulous in his recreations of nature’s beauty. For David, art was community. He enjoyed his involvement with local artists in and around the town of Allyn and in Tacoma. In 2002 and again in 2005, he organized art shows with over 20 local artists.
David is survived by his children, Timothy Miner, Stephen Miner (Kathy), Rose Brink (Phillip), Rae Kent (Dale), Bradley Miner Sr. (Sharon); grandchildren, Jessica Williams (Jared), Kevin Brink (Nina), Sara Davenport (James), Daryl Kent, Rachel Brink, David P. Miner (Erin), Kirsten Bunkeddeko (Juma), Kimberly Miner, Chad Brady (Jessy) and Bradley Miner Jr.; and great-grandchildren – Gabriel Williams, Hannah Williams, Sydney Brink, William Davenport, Emmett Brink, Robert Davenport, Dimah Bunkeddeko, and Brooks Brady; Brother-in-law William Borzick (Gayola), niece Barbara Schuyler (Bill), nephew Mike Killeen (Kristie).
He is preceded by his wife of 69 years, Rita Miner, his parents, sister Doris Killeen, nephew Daniel Killeen and grandson Sean Brady.
