

John Joseph McWilliams, known affectionately as Sandy, passed away on October 5, 2023, in Kirkland, Washington, at the age of 75. He was born on May 16, 1948, in Turtle Creek, Pennsylvania.
Sandy faced the diagnosis of leukemia with remarkable courage and grace in January of 2022. Over the course of a year and a half, he demonstrated extraordinary resilience in the face of adversity, a testament to his unwavering spirit.
Having served as a commissioned officer in the US Army as a first lieutenant, Sandy's sense of duty and honor were evident in every facet of his life. It was during his service that he was afforded the opportunity to travel to Japan, an experience that deepened his affection for the country and its rich culture. Following his retirement from the Army, Sandy turned his focus towards academic pursuits, earning a Master’s degree in Asian Studies and Japanese Language from the esteemed Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. This academic achievement marked a new chapter, leading him once again to Japan in 1979, where he would ultimately meet his beloved wife, Takako Hasegawa.
Sandy's remarkable ability to adapt and master the Japanese language, both spoken and written, culminated in his very successful venture: Nichi-Bei Translations, a testament to his willpower and diligence. Through his business, he played a crucial role in facilitating communication and understanding between the Japanese and English language.
Sandy's love for the outdoors was boundless, with fishing standing as his cherished pastime. Whether by the water's edge or amidst the grandeur of nature, he found solace and joy.
Sandy's intelligence was a beacon, guiding him through life's challenges with a stubborn determination. His drive and discipline were the cornerstones of his many successes.
Above all, Sandy was a selfless soul, putting the needs and happiness of his loved ones above his own. His acts of kindness and generosity touched the lives of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
A devoted father, Sandy leaves behind a legacy of love in his children: Sean McWilliams, Mikhail McWilliams, and Azusa McWilliams. His adoration extended to his cherished grandchildren: Miyuki McWilliams, Alanna McWilliams, and Grady McWilliams, who will forever hold his memory in their hearts.
He leaves behind a legacy of love, perseverance, and selflessness and will forever be remembered as a figure of strength and a source of inspiration to all who had the honor of knowing him.
