David was born in Modesto, CA on November 21st, 1931 to Manuel Marshall, and Olivia Marshall (Chapman). He was the youngest of three children; sister Katherine Lawler, and brother Griffith Marshall. He was raised on a large Dairy Ranch in Gustine, CA. While attending high school David was a competitive runner, and a jazz musician. He joined the Army in 1951, and played in the Army Band.
After his military service David attended Brooks School of photography in New Jersey and later opened a photography studio and camera shop in Escalon. In his early adult years his career experience was as diverse as his interests, however what was consistent was his passion for entrepreneurial endeavors. David spent time as a musical booking agent, a professional jazz musician, and a professional photographer, a volunteer firefighter, and a law student, not to mention numerous other investments and businesses. Dave finally settled on the insurance industry and settled down in Fresno California. He was immensely successful, and and became known as an insurance industry leader. He was a Certified Life Underwriter (CLU), and a member of the Million Dollar Roundtable.
David met and married Dorothy Stindt in 1975. They had four children, two from Dorothy's first marriage Ann Jones (Hurst), and Matthew Hurst, Anita Seitz (Marshall), and Derek Marshall. Dave was a family man. He took his family on many vacations and camping trips. He was proud of and charmed by all four of his children and all five of his grandchildren: Jaclyn Jones (20), Madeline Jones (18), Phoebe Seitz (10), Ian Seitz (8) and Katherine Seitz (5). He had close and loving relationships with his children's spouses Randy Jones, Kelly Hurst, Matthew Seitz and Mavianne Marshall, his nephews and his nieces. David was always ready to celebrate family successes and offering to offer support if necessary. He will be sorely missed by his family.
In the 1980s David started Group Computer Systems, an insurance industry updated database that allowed insurance agents and health insurance carriers to provide accurate and timely benefit proposals. In 1987 GCS was acquired by Group Benefit Shoppers, bringing David and his family to Boulder, CO. David felt this move was one of the best of his life. David loved Colorado. David had a successful stint at GBS, but his entrepreneurial spirit proved too strong, he left and opened his own agency. As Owner and President of David A. Marshall and Associates, David grew his business from a small basement operation to one of the largest producing agencies in the Front Range. David just retired last year, he was exhaustive in his search for an agency with the right culture and values to take on his clients. He sold his business to Volk and Associates in 2015 after feeling he had found the right fit. He believed in a duty of care, and wanted to ensure his clients continued to receive a high standard of service. After retirement David and Dorothy moved to Westminster, CO to be closer to their children and grandchildren. They moved into their daughter's neighborhood, this allowed her children to develop a special bond and relationship with their dear Papa over the last year.
Throughout David's life he was active in hobbies and social activities. David was a 53 year member of the Masonic Order and was a past Master of the Lodge 14. He was a member of the Shriners and a Past President of the Boulder Shrine. David started the San Joaquin Valley American Diabetes Association chapter, and is a past president of that organization. David loved to sail and owned a Hobie Cat during his bachelor years. He had a lifetime love affair with Jazz and Photography. David loved to travel with his wife: they saw many countries, cultures and sights together. David and Dorothy became locally famous for their epic 4th of July parties.
David battled diabetes for over 40 years. It was a hard fight, but he always remained positive, and tough. He became insulin dependent in 1986, and battled many related health problems. These challenges help to illustrate his character: optimistic, tough and resilient. He lost his right leg over 7 years ago. During that period he was in the hospital for over 7 months. After this experience David continued to drive himself to work and travel. He was inspired by this experience to write his memoirs, which evolved into a 622 page book. What can we say? He was a colorful character, with a lot of life experiences and an absolute loathing of editing. Sadly diabetes, and it's related maladies eventually won this battle. David was surrounded by family as he left this world, and headed for the next party.
David was preceded in death by his parents Olivia Marshall (Chapman) and Manuel Marshall, and his nephew Richard Lawler. David is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years Dorothy, and his 4 children: Ann, Matthew, Anita and Derek, his 5 grandchildren, and his sister and brother: Katherine Lawler and Griffith Marshall.
