David G. Potts

Dave was born in Boulder in 1933 to Frank C. Potts and Hazel L. (Townsley) Potts and spent his years as a lifetime “Boulderite”. Anyone who knew him was very familiar with his warm smile, fun-loving nature and hearty laugh. Before graduating from CU in 1960, he played football for the Colorado Buffaloes and was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He then joined the Marines, proudly serving from 1951-1955 and fought in the Korean War. While in the Marines, Dave became an accomplished boxer and, upon returning to Colorado, he continued boxing, becoming a Golden Gloves contender in 1958.

On December 21, 1959, Dave married his high school sweetheart Donna “Dee” J. Davenport. After 47 years of marriage, Donna passed away in May, 1997. He is survived by his daughter Dawn Potts-McGinnis (Boulder) and his sisters Frances L. Jackson (Chandler, AZ) and Donna M. Frasier (Rocky Point, Mexico) and many nieces, nephews, cousins and their children.

Dave participated in several business ventures over the years and although he was retired, he always enjoyed interaction with people and a chance to make them laugh. He loved to give back to his community and felt that volunteering was the best way. Dave volunteered at EFAA in Boulder and more recently the Humane Society Thrift Store where he received Volunteer of the Month awards at each. If you’d been to the Thrift Store while he was there over the last 13 years you were likely greeted by Bo and treated to some of Dave’s favorite big band music or the “crooners” of the 40’s and 50’s; all of which were a highlight for many of the shoppers there.

He was an avid reader and had a great interest in history, particularly the Civil War period. In high school Dave excelled in basketball and track and was an editor for the school newspaper. Later in life some of his hobbies included fishing, gold panning, spending time with his family…and rooting for the Buffs and Broncos! He felt very strongly about “recycle, reduce and re-use” long before many others had caught on (another hobby!)

The family welcomes your attendance at the memorial service for Dave Potts on Friday, October 10, 2014 at 4:00 pm, at the Unity Church of Boulder; reception to follow immediately with family and friends. Interment will take place at Mountain View Memorial Park at a later date where he will be laid to rest next to his devoted wife. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the Humane Society of Boulder Valley or the American Lung Association.
