With heavy hearts, we bid farewell to an extraordinary soul, Douglas Dale Fuhr, who gracefully joined his beloved wife, Marge, in the arms of angels on October 21st, 2023.
Born in the charming town of Washington, Iowa, Doug embodied the spirit of a true Iowa farm boy, his roots grounded deep in the rich soil of his upbringing. His childhood tales, filled with the adventures of Tony the Pony, the farm that nurtured him, and the love story with his high school sweetheart, Marge McCleery, painted a vivid picture of his early years.
Doug's journey led him to the University of Iowa, where his intellect and determination flourished. Majoring in chemical engineering and industrial psychology, he earned a National Merit Scholarship and embarked on a path of knowledge and discovery. After graduation, he followed his heart to Boulder, drawn by love and a passion for fly fishing, a hobby that would weave its way through more than five decades of his life.
In 1958, Doug and Marge exchanged vows in their hometown, marking the beginning of a beautiful chapter. Doug's career in insurance spanned over 40 years, during which he opened his own agency and became a respected figure in Boulder.
But Doug was more than a successful professional; he was a pillar of his community. His dedication to the First Presbyterian Church as an esteemed Elder and his nearly two decades of volunteering at the C.U. Fellowship of Christian Athletes showcased his unwavering commitment to others.
Driven by love and compassion, Doug co-founded the National Board for the R.L.S. Foundation alongside Marge, advocating for those affected by restless leg syndrome. His kindness, dry wit, and boundless generosity left an indelible mark on everyone he met.
Doug is survived by his brother, Richard (Dick) and Louise Fuhr. And his legacy lives on through his children, Matthew Fuhr, Gretchen Shaffner, and Peter Fuhr (DeeAnn Rivera), and his six adoring grandchildren. While we mourn his absence, we take solace in the knowledge that he is reunited with Marge and finds eternal peace in the embrace of the divine.
In the tapestry of life, Doug Fuhr's thread was woven with love, kindness and enduring spirit. Rest in peace Doug, knowing that your legacy of warmth and generosity will forever echo in our hearts.
A celebration of life for Douglas will be held Thursday, November 30, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Grace Commons Church, 1820 15th Street, Boulder, Colorado 80302.
