

Elizabeth Kitchen Patton died in Boulder at the age of 91. She was born in Waterbury, Connecticut on February 10, 1919, the daughter of Ida Belle Bailey and Walter Gamage Kitchen. She graduated with a degree in journalism from Simmons College in Boston in 1941. One year later on June 10th, 1942 she married Donald J. Patton on his graduation day from Harvard. That afternoon they left for his job as a geographer in Europe during World War II. During this time Betty worked for the State Department as a code clerk in Portugal. After the war her husband Donald returned to Harvard for his Ph.D. in geography. Just in time for the baby boom, they started a family of seven children in Howard County, Maryland all while Betty was employed as a secretary at the Brookings Institution, Washington, D.C. Eventually they settled in Tallahassee, Florida where they resided for 34 years. Betty was very active volunteering in countless community endeavors, the Democratic Party, and the Episcopal Church.
Surviving children include oldest son Daniel (Silvia) of Fairfax County, Virginia; Tom of Boulder; Eleanor Chalmers (Tom) of Boulder; Margaret Blank (Neil) of Eldorado Springs; and William of Boulder. She is predeceased by husband Donald Patton and two children, Richard of Chattahoochee, Florida; and Donald of Eldorado Springs. She is survived by a sister, Marjorie Jurewicz of Rockport, Massachusetts. Two other siblings, Charlotte Full, and Walter Kitchen, have preceded her in death. She was proud to have eight grandchildren.
