November 2, 1937 -- October 7, 2023
Larry Thomas was born in Monessen, PA, a small steel-making city in southwestern Pennsylvania. He was raised there, the eldest of three siblings.
He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1959. With a B.S. in mining engineering in hand, he was ready for a lifetime of adventurous work around the globe.
Larry met and married his first love, Marjorie Ransick, in Pittsburgh. They married in 1963. Two sons, Len and Jim, were welcomed into the family.
The John T Boyd Company, a mining consulting firm, was Larry's working home for over four decades. Over the years his work took him all over the world. He worked in Pakistan, Borneo, Australia , South Africa, Canada, Colombia and Chile, among others. His love of travel and exotic places never ended.
In 1987, Larry and family moved to Denver to head the firm's Denver office. Tragically, Marjorie died in a terrible auto accident not long after they settled in Boulder.
The Colorado Mountain Club has to be given credit for starting the next chapter of his life. On his first hike with the group, he met Ann Brennan, also recently widowed. The pair married in 1991. For their 32 years together, hiking and travel were major elements in their lives.
Larry is survived by his wife, Ann, his sons, Leonard of Denver and James, his wife Tina and daughter, Mia, of North Wales, PA, his step-daughter, Erin Brennan, her husband, Jeff Huang and children, Owen and Claire of Cambridge, MA. He also leaves behind his brother George and wife Maxine of Murrysville, PA and sister Kathy Seay and husband Butch of Tallahassee, FL and several nieces and nephews.
Larry was a lovely, cheerful and optimistic man who loved his family, the outdoors, classical music, and Pitt basketball. He brought fun and laughter into the lives of alli who knew him. He will be greatly missed.
A graveside service will be held at Mountain View Memorial Park, 3016 Kalmia Ave. in Boulder on October 17 at 11:00.. All are welcome to attend the service. A gathering will follow at Crist Mortuary, 3395 Penrose Place, Boulder.
