Roy was born May 1, 1935, to Roy Alexander and Marion Violet Hunter in Detroit Michigan where he spent his early childhood. The Hunters migrated west to Madison Wisconsin where Roy attended and graduated from Madison West High School. In September of 1955, Roy served his country by joining the United States Army and was honorably discharged in September 1957. Once back in Madison, Roy pursued and successfully completed his Business degree at Wisconsin State College in Whitewater Wisconsin. Post graduation Roy relocated to Marshfield Wisconsin and obtained a teaching position at Spencer High School. Soon after, an opportunity with Madison Gas and Electric brought him back to Madison. In the early 70’s, the Rockies were calling and Roy relocated to Boulder Colorado where he founded Hunter Quality Carpet’s. Upon moving away from the flooring business, Roy worked for Ball Aerospace (Hubble Space Telescope Project), tutored students at Front Range Community College and taught some evening classes at Boulder Valley Vocational Technical School as he remained passionate about educating others. In 2016, Roy received a Certificate of Appreciation in recognition of 12 years of volunteer service to Longmont Senior Services / Senior Computer Tech Center. Also, in 2019 he was recognized as a board member by the Friends of the Longmont Senior Center for his contributions and commitment to the older adults of Longmont.
Beyond his professional and volunteer endeavors, Roy found joy in capturing moments on film while enthusiastically supporting his son's athletic pursuits. His knack for thoughtful and creative Christmas gifts was a cherished tradition, ensuring that every family member—including the four-legged ones—felt included in the holiday spirit. During various times in his life, Roy actively participated in hockey, golf, tennis, and gardening, with a special interest in harvesting his prized tomatoes. He was highly passionate about his hobbies, which included building computers, photography and coin collecting.
Roy is survived by his Sons Andy Hunter (Eddie) and David Hunter (Nicole), Granddaughter Jennifer Hunter, Grandson Paul Hunter, as well as Step-Grandson’s Michael Dartez and Dane Dartez.
Roy was proceeded in death by his parents, Roy and Violet Hunter and his brothers, Steve Hunter and Tom Hunter.
Roy was a cherished Father, Father-in-Law, Grandfather, Step-Grandfather, Teacher, and Friend, whose absence is deeply felt by his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Roy’s Celebration of Life will commence at 10:30 AM on Saturday May 31 at Crist Mortuary, 3395 Penrose Place, Boulder Colorado. Interment will follow at Mountain View Memorial Park.
