Thomas (Tom) Lawrence McKevitt Jr. passed away on December 28th, 2020 in Boulder, Colorado. He was born in Washington, DC on August 10, 1941 to Thomas Lawrence McKevitt Sr. and Dorothy Dugan McKevitt and is survived by his wife Molly Heins, his three children Kelly, Michael (Angie), and Baird (Emily), his seven grandchildren, Zack, Jillian, Lane, Thomas, Nell, Peter, and Graham, his brothers John, Brian (Sallie), and Mark (Christine) and his sister Shiela Hanson (Pete). His former spouse, Barbara (Bobbi) McKevitt preceded him in passing in 2014. He graduated from Gonzaga College High School in 1959 and Villanova University in 1963. He served in the Maryland Army National Guard in the late 1960’s, before beginning his career at the National Institutes of Health as a technician operating a heart-lung machine during experimental open-heart surgery.
Tom had a successful sales and marketing career in the medical device industry, working for large international companies such as Medtronic and ValleyLab, early-stage startups Cybermedic and Piko Healthcare in the respiration space, and was President of Respond First Aid Systems, a leader in on-site first aid supplies. In addition, he also worked with InfoPet in the early years of microchipping pets.
Tom’s family and his career took him from Maryland to Connecticut and Minnesota before landing in Boulder, Colorado in 1977. He was a talented baseball player growing up, a lifelong voracious reader and someone who loved the outdoors, often spending vacations traveling around the country and camping with his family. He loved history, anything about Ireland, continuous learning, and the whole Louis L’Amour library of books (which he read more than once). He always said his greatest gift was his family, and that there was no better place than to be around those he loved. Those who know him say “the only thing bigger than Tom McKevitt’s smile, was his heart”.
A private celebration of Tom’s life was held virtually on Saturday, January 2nd, 2021. Stories of his sense of humor, his big heart, and his joy for others were shared. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Imagine! (www.imaginecolorado.org) or Attention Homes (www.attentionhomes.org), both are Boulder based organizations that were dear to Tom’s heart.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.dignitymemorial.com for the McKevitt family.
