

Donald H. Tibbits, 85, of Anna Maria Island, Florida, and Pentwater, Michigan, passed away on January 22, 2024. Born on Dec. 6, 1938, in Hudson, Michigan, Donald was a kind-hearted man who had a passion for helping others. He was known for his ability to build and fix anything, always generously offering his time and skills to those in need. Donald's gentle nature and willingness to lend a hand will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Donald is survived by his loving wife, Judith, his daughter, Terilyn Tibbits (Maria), son Timothy Tibbits, (Shelley), son-in-law Larry Zahner, grandchildren, Dr. Lauren Tibbits (Dr. Lucas Meehan), Franklin Tibbits, Lawrence Zahner, Brandi Nicholas (Brandon), and great-grandchildren Amelia Jane Meehan, Layla Jane and Micah Nicholas.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Mae Tibbits; first wife, Janie; daughter, Tamera Zahner; and siblings, Rose, Barbara, Walter and Emily.
Donald proposed to Janie Vogel, whom he worked with at the Adrian J.C. Penney’s,and the two were married just before they headed off to Michigan State University to pursue their education. Janie earned her teaching degree and Donald used his degree to embark on a long and successful career at Allstate Insurance, where he worked as a claims manager in the Lansing regional office. His dedication and expertise made a lasting impact on the company and his colleagues.
Donald and Janie raised their three children in Lansing. As the kids were growing up and retirement was nearing, they began to spend more time up north. In 1989 they retired to the Pentwater area on the beautiful shores of Lake Michigan. They later split the seasons, spending summers near Pentwater and winters on the Gulf Coast’s Anna Maria Island.
After Janie died, Donald married a dear family friend, Judith Manke. The two were married on the island of Kauai and enjoyed many wonderful years together, traveling extensively.
Wherever Donald was, he was living life to the fullest, enjoying a bowl of ice cream, visiting with family and friends, and building. Never one to sit still, Donald immersed himself into projects and volunteering, working with Habitat for Humanity, the Pentwater Artisan Learning Center and tinkering.
His talent and passion for craftsmanship were evident in every piece he made, with many of these skills gleaned from the family farm where he was raised. Family members continue to enjoy pieces created by Donald, whom they affectionately referred to as “Poppy T.”
In memory of Donald H. Tibbits, contributions can be made to the Pentwater Artisan Learning Center, 780 E. Park St, Pentwater, MI 49449. This organization holds a special place in Donald's heart and supports local artists in their creative endeavors.
Donald's warm presence, kind heart, and unwavering generosity will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
