Born July 5, 1920, in Winchester, Indiana, he was a son of the late D. Forest Benson and Lela Mae Coddington. He was also preceded in death by a son, Gary R. Benson, brother Ralph L. Benson, and sister Mary Richardson.
He was a member of Bradenton First Church of the Nazarene for 25 years.
Survivors include his daughter Karen (Robert M.) Daniels of St. Petersburg, son James D. Benson of Winchester, Indiana, sisters Melva M. of Ohio, Barbara J. of Winchester, and Patricia L. of Kentucky, and by 4 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
