Born in Toledo, Ohio, Mary moved to Bradenton with her parents in 1947. She met the love of her life, James “Jim” Carson Nanney, on a blind date, and the two married shortly thereafter, sharing 63 wonderful years together. Red’s life revolved around her Catholic faith, her family, and being a great homemaker to their six children.
Nicknamed “Red” for her red hair, she had a fiery spirit, tireless energy and passion for life. As a young girl, she worked in her father’s “five and dime” store in Berryville, West Virginia. Later, she sold insurance and real estate and helped Jim run the family’s flower greenhouse business in Terra Ceia. Red was an avid bridge player—her Monday bridge club was one of her greatest pleasures. She and Jim were world travelers who especially loved spending time at their home in Ruidoso, New Mexico. A talented seamstress and art and antique collector, Red never passed a yard sale without stopping to treasure-hunt.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Helen Stough; brother, Tom Stough; sisters, Thelma Stough Clevinger (Charles) and Betty Stough; and her husband, Jim Nanney.
Red is survived by her six children: Bill Nanney (Beth) of Sebring, FL; Pat Nanney (Margi) of Oneco, FL; Kitty Selitto (Ron) of Cape Coral, FL; Mike Nanney (Augusta) of Bradenton, FL; Valerie Reaume of Bradenton, FL; and Jennifer Glassburn (Gene) of Duette, FL. She also leaves behind thirteen grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren as well as nephews, Gary Stough (Diane) of Toccoa, GA and Rick Stough (Jan) of Franklin, NC and niece Ann LaVere (Tony) of Franklin, NC.
Robert Toale & Sons at Manasota Memorial Park is handling arrangements. The family will hold a private graveside service and a family reunion to celebrate her life at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Red’s name to the Manatee County Agricultural Museum, 1015 6th Street West, Palmetto, FL 34221, or online at manateecountyagmuseum.com manateecountyagmuseum.com
