With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Richard Paul “Rick” Greendonner, 75, who left us peacefully at 12:06 a.m. on September 6, 2025, while receiving hospice care at the Bay Pines VA Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida. Rick fought a courageous battle against cancer three times—thyroid cancer, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and ultimately, stage 4 lung cancer.
Born on April 29, 1950, Rick was a man whose warmth, kindness, and humor made him the friendliest face in the room. He lived life on his own terms, firmly believing that being on time was the same as being late, a sentiment that perfectly captured his free-spirited nature and commitment to enjoying every moment.
Rick was incredibly proud of his service in the United States Navy, having served two tours during the Vietnam War in 1969 and 1973. He was honorably discharged with the rank of YN3 and was awarded numerous honors for his service, including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal.
Above all else, Rick was a dedicated father, and the love he had for his daughter, Heather "Nikki" Greendonner, knew no bounds. He was fiercely proud of her and made sure the world knew it. He also leaves behind his son-in-law, Ponlawat “Nat” Nanchinda, his two grandsons, Thirawat and Thirachet Nanchinda, his 18-year-old dog Gizmo, and 3-year-old dog Bubbles.
Rick had a deep love for dogs, enjoyed his morning coffee, and relished long, meaningful conversations on his back porch. He lived with a generosity of spirit, and his ability to connect with others—whether through a shared laugh or a quiet moment—was one of his greatest gifts.
Though Rick is no longer with us, his legacy of love, laughter, and service will live on in his family and in the many lives he touched. His passing leaves a hole in our hearts, but we are comforted by the knowledge that he is now at peace. Rick is someone who spoke lightly and frankly about his passing someday, and would not want for his friends or family to be upset. In his spirit, it is our hope that he is remembered fondly as someone who once brightened your day.
A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. Flowers may be sent to his daughter, Nikki, or a donation may be made in Rick’s name to the Wounded Warrior Project or the American Cancer Society, or in honor of Rick’s lifelong devotion to service and his own battles with cancer. Please also enjoy a meal at a local Mission BBQ where Rick loved to eat and support a veteran-focused cause.
Rest in peace, Rick. You will never be forgotten as you live on in the hearts of those who love you.
