Our beloved father, Abelardo Tibayan, passed away peacefully at his home on February 4, 2026, at the age of 90.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Teodora Tibayan, and by his children and their families: James and Wechie; Agnes and Tanny; Amiel and Glaiza; and Abel and Kym. He was a very loving grandfather to Aaron, Shane, Johann, Allie, Jahn, Alex, Isaiah Kaiden, Kyle, and Kale, and a fatherly figure to Omar. "
Abelardo was born in the Philippines on March 8, 1935, and grew up in Amadeo, Cavite, a place he always carried in his heart. Known to many as “Kapitan Berning,” he dedicated years of his life to serving his community with kindness, humility, and a genuine desire to help others. He had a lifelong passion for politics and current events, and he loved having conversations about them with anyone willing to listen. His warm smile and easygoing nature made people feel comfortable, and he had a way of bringing lightness wherever he went.
The family’s beloved uncle, he endeared himself to everyone through his steady wisdom, gentle guidance, and unwavering support. He generously shared life lessons drawn from his own experiences, offering thoughtful advice and meaningful mentorship to his nieces and nephews. He was generous at heart, always the first to extend a helping hand whether for a simple favor or a significant family need. No task was too small, and no burden too great when it came to caring for those he loved. His kindness, selflessness, and constant presence will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all whose lives he touched.
