Outside of work, John found his greatest joy on the water. He loved spending time on his boat, creating memories with family and friends at Lake Shasta and Don Pedro Lake. He was also passionate about riding his Harley, embracing the freedom of the open road and the adventures that came with it.
John is survived by his daughters, Kaite Alves (Nelson) and her children, Carson, Cameron, Hailey, and Huckson; and Megan Miller (Colin) and their sons, Conor, Cooper, and Colton. He is also survived by his sister, Donna Kavanaugh (Dan); his nephew, Ryan Kavanaugh (Jen) and their son, Lucas; and his niece, Kimberly Scheer (Alex) and their son, Liam. He is preceded by his parents Arthur and Esther Esplin, and two brothers Larry and Bob.
John will be remembered for his quick whit, sense of humor, love of family, his laugh, his ability to make light of any situation, and the many memories he created with those he loved. His presence will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who knew him.
A Celebration of Life will be held on June 27, 2026 at 2pm at the Alves' home. Family and friends are invited to gather to honor John's life, share memories, and celebrate the lasting impact he had on those around him.
