

Phil was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend who left us all too soon May 5, 2017. He was born to Lt. Cmdr. Edward McGurn and Wilma Rose Weening McGurn in Washington, D.C. As part of a Navy family and young boy, he lived in China and Germany and was later raised in Castro Valley. He graduated from Castro Valley High School in 1964 and went on to attend St. Mary’s College in Moraga. He did a short stint as a Merchant Seaman and often talked of his adventures in Viet Nam and Africa. In 1967 he met Bonnie Fromm they married in 1969 and their love for each other grew over 49 years. He is also survived by his children, Edward McGurn and Elizabeth Kang (David), sister Marianne Nisson (Robert), grandsons Philip and Ryder McGurn, granddaughter Evelyn Kang, and nephew Reed Nisson.
Phil retired from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in 2004 having worked in the Electrical Engineering Dept. He was known for his sharp wit and wonderful sense of humor. He was intelligent, friendly and big-hearted. He had a warm voice and loved telling a good story as well as partaking in a rousing argument.
In his younger years he enjoyed camping, hiking, dancing, swimming, and track. He was an avid reader and had a keen interest in history. He also enjoyed traveling, watching football and boxing and was a lifelong Raiders fan. He loved being with his family and horsing around with his grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers donations in Phil’s memory may be made to a disease or health awareness charity.
There will be a graveside service 5/12/17 11am at Union Cemetery 11545 Brentwood Blvd., Brentwood, CA 94513
