

Donald R. King, age 86, passed away peacefully on May 9, 2014. Preceded in death by his parents, Willie Emma and Guy King and sister, Angie Merrill. He is survived by his wife of almost 64 years, Joanne Smith King; children, Denton Reeves King (Pat Allsbrooks), Steven Manston King (Kimberly Robinson), Donna Evelyn King, Christopher Bentley King (Kathleen Sanders), Douglas Moore King (Kimberly Adams); 8 grandchildren Patrick Harrison (Cher), Andrew King (Kristin), Jonathan King (Ashira), Julianna Harrison, Lauren King, Thomas King, Collin and Hunter King; great grandchildren, Jaden, Alexi, Sophia, Joseph Issac and Addison; and one younger brother Cornell King. Mr. King was Commissioner of Revenue for Tennessee from 1963 to 1966. Prior to his appointment he held positions with the State Comptroller of the Treasury for thirteen years, he was Director of County Audits, Director of Local Finance and Assistant to The Comptroller. He was the First Chairman of The Elk River Development Agency. While Chairman, the Agency received approval from Congress to develop the Tims Ford Dam & Reservior. From 1966 until 1992 he was engaged in the insurance brokerage business. During this period he held executive positions with Forrest Life Insurance Co. and Blair Follin Allen & Walker, a Nashville-based company, Synercon, a southeastern company, Corroon & Black, a New York based company with national operations and Willis & Corroon, a London, England company with global operations. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Synercon, Corroon & Black and Willis Corroon, where he was a chairman of the company Benefits & Specialty Sales Group. He attended the University of Tennessee and was a licensed public accountant. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the Navy. He was a past member of the Board of Directors of State Volunteer Mutual Insurance Co. & First Tenn. Bank-Nashville. He was an active member of the Brentwood United Methodist Church and Robert I. Moore class, and had served as a Trustee, a member of the Administrative Board and an usher. He was a member of the Brentwood Country Club. Donald was known as a man of integrity. He was a prudent man, loyal to his church family and faithful to his wife and family. A generous hearted man.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at three o’clock in the afternoon on Saturday, the 17th of May, 2014 at Brentwood United Methodist Church with Bishop Spain officiating.
