Douglas Overton Herndon, 87, a long time resident of Brentwood, TN died November 15, 2013 at Centennial Medical Center after a short illness.
"Doug" was born in Providence, TN in 1926 and was the youngest of five siblings. He met and married Eloise Bryant Herndon in 1950 and had a son, Michael, in 1951 while stationed at the army base in Ft. Bragg, NC.
He attended University of Tennessee - Martin and the University of Tennessee - Knoxville from 1954 - 1958 where he graduated with a BS in Industrial Management. His professional career started in Knoxville,TN in 1958 with Sinclair Oil Company. After a two-year stint in Dyersburg, TN he moved with his family to Nashville, TN where his daughter, Patricia "Trish", was born.
From 1963 - 1968 Doug's career took him and his family to Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Tampa, FL and Clearwater, FL. After a promotion to Area Sales Manager for Atlantic Richfield Company (ARCO) Doug and his family moved back to Nashville. In 1975, he purchased a chain of convenience markets which evolved to become "Grand Ole Markets". In 1993 he sold the business and retired.
After retirement, Doug enjoyed many days playing golf with close friends at Brentwood Country Club where he scored his last of five holes-in-one in his 80's. He was a long time member of Crievewood United Methodist Church where he served as President of the Builders Class, was an active member in the Men's Club and served in several ca-pacities on church committees and boards.
Doug was an avid Tennessee Volunteer fan and enjoyed playing bridge and checkers. During the last decade he spent his winters in Central Florida with family and close friends, traveling the world and perfecting his golf game.
Doug is predeceased by his wife, Eloise and his four siblings. He is survived by his two children, Mike and Trish, his longtime companion Reba Manning, nieces and nephews and many close friends.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Monday, the 18th of November 2013 at one-thirty in the afternoon at Brentwood-Roesch-Patton Funeral Home with Rev. Peter Van Eys officiating. Graveside services will also be held on Tuesday morning at eleven o'clock at Belleview Cemetery in Bells, TN. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Crievewood United Methodist Church Builders Class.
The family cordially invites friends to gather with them for a time of visitation and remembrance today from two o'clock until four o'clock in the afternoon at Brentwood-Roesch-Patton Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations and/or contributions may be made to Crievewood United Methodist Church.
