

Glenn Richard King Sr., age 88 of Brentwood, Tennessee passed away May 16, 2016. Glenn was born on April 19, 1928 in Alcoa, TN, the son of John Russell King and Hettie Mae Webb King. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Faye Marie Boyd King and their three children, Patricia Marie King, Glenna Sue King and Glenn Richard (Rick), King Jr. (Robbie). He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Genna Baker, Kaitlan Brock (Michael), Wesley Osborn, Matthew Taylor (Brittany), Tyler King, Alexandra King, Rebecca King and two great-grandchildren, Chloe Brock and Elijah Taylor . He is also survived by and will be deeply missed by numberous neices, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Mr. King is an alumni of Alcoa High School where he was a standout football player who earned a scholarship to play for Hiwassee College, a Methodist affiliated school. Mr. King is an alumni of Hiwasee where he developed lifelong friendships, strenghtened his love of God and became devoted to the Methodist Church. While attending Hiwasee, Glenn developed his understanding of what a good education means to a person’s life as well as the importance of mentoring people in need. He appreciated all the amazing people that God placed in his path to change the course of his life. He treasured each and every person.
Glenn served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War followed by an additional 10 years in the Army Reserves. He was discharged as a Second Lieutenant in the National Guard in 1964. Glenn served his country well and always appreciated all men and women willing and able to serve their country.
Glenn worked for United Cities Gas Company (now Atmos Energy) for 39 years. He joined the company in 1954, as a sales representative. After managing local offices in Tennessee (Maryville and Bristol), he joined the Corporate Office in Nashville in 1977. In 1978, Glenn was promoted to Vice President for the UCG Energy Corporation and Residential Marketing. In 1986, Glenn was promoted to Sr. Vice President and Secretary, titles he held until his retirement in 1993. Glenn also served as President of both the TN Gas and TN LP Gas Associations receiving numerous honors and awards from both. Glenn put his heart as well as his busineess acumen into his work in the gas industry where he was loved and admired by his co workers, many of whom became dear and lifelong friends.
Glenn was a lifelong volunteer and lay leader in the United Methodist Church, attending Brentwood United Methodist Church (BUMC) since 1977 where he was a member of the Robert I Moore Sunday School Class. Glenn became a Mason in the 1960s in Maryville and at the time of his death was 32nd degree Mason and Knight Commander Court of Honor in the Scottish Rite. He was also a member of several civic and professional organizations, including the Jaycees, Civitan, Rotary clubs. He served in leadership roles and recieved many honors and awards for his work in each.
Glenn was an avid and excellent golfer who had three holes in one recorded. Glenn shot his age when he was 71 and in 1996 was the Sr. Golf Tournament Champion at the Brentwood Country Club. Glenn could use the game of golf to share his amazing gift of friendship and faith to everyone fortunate to have shared the course with him.
Most important in his life were his family and multitude of close friends. He was 10th out of 11 children and has been the last surviving sibling since 1997. He has been the Patriarch of the King Family Reunion in Alcoa and Townsend, TN for the last 20 years and is greatly loved by his cousins, nieces, nephews and their extended families. The love of Glenn's life, Faye, was his rock and his major source of support and encouragement . He was devoted to her until death. A few weeks before passing he said “she made my life”.
Visitation will be held at Brentwood Roesch Patton Funeral Home on Friday May 20th four o’clock until seven with a Masonic Memorial Service at seven o’clock. Funeral services will be on Saturday at two o’clock, May 21 at Brentwood United Methodist Church, Franklin Rd, Brentwood, TN with visitation one hour prior to the service . Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Nashville, TN.
Pallbearers are the King Grandchildren; honorary pallbearers are members of the Robert I. Moore Sunday School Class at BUMC and members of the Senior Men's Golf Group at Brentwood Country Club.
Memorials may be made to Hiwassee College or Brentwood United Methodist Church.
