

BATTEN, Charles Henry, Sr. “Charlie”, age 95 of Spring Lake, passed away October 22, 2010. He was a lifelong resident of Hernando County and loved telling stories about the pioneer days as he knew and lived it. He was an honest, hard working man, who took pride in everything that he did. He was a carpenter, farmer, citrus grower & producer, he loved working with his hands, watching plants grow, loved his citrus trees, cane grindings and raising chickens & hogs. He was a WWII U.S. Army Veteran, achieving the rank of Sergeant. He was a member of Spring Lake United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene and parents, Robert & Henrietta Batten. Survivors include his sons & daughters-in-law: Charles, Jr. “Buddy” & Sabra, John, Robert, Wayne, William Dale and Carole & Jayne all of Brooksville; daughters & sons-in-law: Charlotte & Ted Kiefer of Dade City and Shirley & Dave Price of Brooksville; brothers: Olan of Brooksville and Thomas of Perry; 14 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and one great great grandson. He loved his life, his family, the many good friends he made throughout the years and his little black dog “Baby”. Visitation for friends will be 6 – 8pm, Fri., Oct. 29, 2010 at the Merritt Funeral Home, Brooksville Chapel. Funeral services will be conducted 10:00am, Sat., Oct. 30 at Spring Lake United Methodist Church with Pastor Todd Stube officiating. Burial will follow at the Johnson-Batten Cemetery.
