

MERRITT, William Alonzo, age 64 of Brooksville, died Sunday, June 10, 2012 at his home. He moved to Brooksville 55 years ago from his native, Douglas, GA. He was a paint contractor and former owner of Merritt Painting, working on numerous developments including Meadowcrest and Citrus Hills. He was a graduate of Hernando High School, a Veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during the Vietnam Era and was of the Baptist faith. Alonzo loved to beat the drums! During high school he was the drummer for the Cavemen, playing for high school dances and many other social functions. He played the drums for various bands throughout his lifetime, including the Nasty Habits, house band at the Caribbean Club in Key Largo. He was an avid bass fisherman, participating in numerous professional fishing tournaments, he enjoyed playing the slot machines and poker. Survivors include his sons: Jacob Merritt of Weeki Wachee, FL, LaVon & Duane Merritt both of Hernando Beach, FL; brother & sister-in-law: David & Lynn Merritt of Brooksville; sisters & brothers-in-law: Beverley & Bruce Montgomery Reagan, Janie Hlavac Wiley of Brooksville and Lavennia & Don Barnes; one grandson: Jacobe, numerous nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Monroe & Mildred Merritt. Visitation for friends will be 6 – 8pm, Wednesday, June 13, 2012 at the Merritt Funeral Home, Brooksville Chapel, where funeral services will begin at 11:00am, Thursday, June 14, 2012 with Reverend Bob Hope officiating. Military honors will follow at the Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, FL.
