Mr. Griffin was born in Hazlehurst, Georgia to Queenelle Mimbs and Alvin Milton Griffin on January 30, 1936, and was a long time resident of Brunswick, GA having moved there in 1948. Mr. Griffin graduated from Glynn Academy High School in 1953 and attended the University of Georgia from 1953 to 1958 where he majored in Music Education and Business and performed in the Red Coat Marching Band.
On Christmas break in 1956, he was introduced to his future wife, Phoebe Carolyn Cochran, and the two married in June, 1957. Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Delburt Griffin raised four fine sons and built a loving 64-year marriage.
He was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Waycross, Georgia, on January 16, 1960 and with his wife and young family attended the Brunswick East Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Brunswick for many years. After moving to Cumming in recent years, Delburt and Phoebe attended the Johns Creek Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Wherever they lived, Delburt loved to serve Jehovah.
Mr. Griffin was employed as President/CEO of Glynn Teachers Federal Credit Union (now Marshland Community Federal Credit Union) from January, 1968 to June, 1978 and from February, 1988 until retirement in January, 2000. He also served as Executive Vice-President of HEW Atlanta Federal Credit Union (now Phenix Federal Credit Union) from August, 1980 to February, 1984 and President/CEO of Atlanta City Employees Credit Union from August, 1984 to February, 1988.
After retirement Delburt and Phoebe moved to Fernandina Beach, Florida, where they were able to enjoy many of their life’s passions together. Delburt loved the UGA Bulldogs and, as season ticket holders, he and Phoebe attended many home and away games together. As a lifetime gardener, Delburt occasionally had a small vegetable garden and always maintained a beautiful yard. After flying small aircraft as a hobby for many years, he hung up his wings and resumed playing golf, a passion from the past. He cherished Phoebe, often describing her as the love of his life. Many days and evenings were spent grilling out, taking long walks with Phoebe on the Georgia and Florida beaches near home both before and after retirement. Living close to Neptune Park, the pier, and the beaches of St Simons Island, Georgia, and in later years at Amelia Island, Florida, gave Delburt, Phoebe and family frequent access to the sand and surf they all loved.
Mr. Griffin was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Phoebe Cochran Griffin and his second son Michael Mimbs Griffin (Alice of Nashville). He is survived by his sons: Alvin Delburt (Burt) Griffin, Jr. (Cameron) of Shalimar, FL, Jeffrey Tyler Griffin (Michelle) of Atlanta, GA and Jonathan David Griffin (Paula) of Cumming, GA.; four grandchildren: McKennon Griffin of Shalimar, FL, Matthew Griffin (Casie) of Benton, TN, Laura Griffin of Nashville, TN, and Jackson Griffin of Cumming, GA.
