Aires dos Santos Castanheira

Aires was a native of Alvoeira, Portugal born on January 14, 1920 and arrived in the United States as a legal immigrant with his wife and two children December 16, 1974. He resided in Harrison, NJ and spent many vacations in Portugal after retiring in the late 80’s. Then he moved to Brunswick, GA and had been a resident here for the last five years. He was the son of the late Domingos dos Santos and the late Maria Emilia Castanheira. He was married to the late Ilda do Nascimento. He was also a retired baker from Farinhas Bros. Bakery in New Jersey. Additionally, he attended Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Brunswick, GA.

A visitation will be held Friday, January 15, 2015 from 3:00 – 5:00 PM at the Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church. A Funeral Mass will follow the visitation at 5:00 PM at Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church with Father Chris Ortega officiating. His remains will be laid to rest in his hometown in Portugal.

The active pallbearers will be Henrique J. Castanheira, Peter W. Tortorell Jr., Alexandre M. Castanheira, Andrew Castanheira, Michael P. Tortorell, and Matthew J. Tortorell.

Aires was preceded in death by his mother, father and loving wife Ilda do Nascimento. He was also preceded in death by his twin sister, Marcolina Castanheira and a brother Ramiro dos Santos. He is survived by, a son Henrique Castanheira ( Lucilia Castanheira) from Middleburg, FL; one daughter Anabela C. Tortorell (Peter W. Tortorell Jr.) from Brunswick,GA; five grandchildren, Alexandre M. Castanheira of Middleburg, FL, Natalie C. Sousa of Brooklyn, NY, Andrew Castanheira ( Brittney A. Castanheira) of Jacksonville, FL, Michael P.Tortorell of Brunswick, GA, and Matthew J. Tortorell of Brunswick, GA.

Aires loved to spend time with his family and friends. He also treasured the time he spent with his grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. However his family and friends will have many fond memories to cherish for years to come.
