

Archie Curtis Howell, Sr., 85, of Darien, GA passed away Sunday, April 27, 2014 at his residence. Mr. Howell was born November 1, 1928 in Toombs County, Georgia. He was a graduate of Toombs Central High School.
Mr. Howell had been a member of the First Baptist Church in Darien since 1963. He served his country in the United States Air Force, which included 18 months at the Pentagon and in Germany. Mr. Howell was employed by Continental Can Company in Savannah, Georgia for 14 years where he worked as a computer programmer. In 1963, Mr. Howell became the owner operator of the Western Auto in Darien, Georgia until his retirement in May of 1990. Mr. Howell’s interests and hobbies included landscaping, fishing, and reading.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mertice Spivey Howell, three daughters: Denise Parker (Alan), Elaine Rankin (Perry), Nora Jessup (Steve); two sons Archie Howell Jr. (Wendy) and Carey Howell (Melanie); 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Polly Howell Wilson, and Beullah Howell Spivey, and a brother Wendell Howell (Jacklyon), as well as, many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Linton C. and Zora Smith Howell, eight siblings, an infant son, a grandson, Stephen D. Jessup Jr, and a granddaughter Mary Grace Howell.
Funeral service will be held 11:00 AM, Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at the First Baptist Church of Darien with Dr. Danny Barton officiating. The family will receive friends from 9:30 AM until the time of service. Graveside Services will be 3:00 PM at Providence Baptist Church Cemetery in Lyons, GA, with Reverend Bill Black officiating. Serving as active pallbearers will be Trey Howell, Cletus Jessup, Richard Hendricks, Bobby Summerlin, Christopher Summerlin, Kelly Coursey, and Will Howell.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Jack Bethune Sunday School Class, FBC Darien, David Bluestein, Marvin Crosby, Bill Fleming, Joel Williams , Andy Rogers, and Ad Poppell.
