A generous heart has come to rest. Barbara (Mendel) Henderson died in her home on St. Simons Island Georgia on Tuesday, February 13th.
Barbie grew up in Madison, Wisconsin, in a loving home with her parents and three siblings. She graduated from James Madison Memorial High School in 1973, and moved to Boston where she met her beloved husband David Henderson, whom she wed in 1988. They had 30 years together of adventure, travel, love, friends, many homes, many laughs, and many cherished memories. They retired to St Simons one year ago. Barb was a woman who loved with her whole heart, and gave freely all she could offer. Her immense generosity was surpassed only by her overwhelming love of animals and children. Her kind and caring nature drew people to her, and earned her friends from all walks of life. In her short time on St Simons, she touched the lives of all who met her. Her family and friends were her greatest treasures, as evidenced by the many lifelong friendships she nurtured and maintained over distances and decades. Her laugh was genuine and easy, her smile was warm and bright, and although she may have kept you waiting, the room filled with love and light when she finally walked in.
Barb was preceded in death by her parents, Phil and Doris Mendel; her grandmother-in-law Dorothy Agee; her father-in-law Edgar B Henderson; her uncle-in-law Robert R Agee, and by her brothers-in-law, Jeffery and Stan. She is survived by her beloved husband Dave; her mother-in-law, Marian; her sisters, Pamela and Jill (Patrick); a brother, Philip (Stephanie); sisters-in-law Rebecca and Sheree; brother-in-law, Carl (Shari); nieces and nephews, Lindsay (Matt), Corrin (Tanner), Lucas (Meredith), Jacob, Gage, Vivian,
Lauren, Sean, Aaron, Brince, Beth, Lindsay, Stacy, and Stephanie; also great nephews Wesley and Charles.
A private memorial service will be held in Madison WI, followed by a reception for anyone whose life was brighter because Barb was in it.
If desired, memorials may be made to the Dane County Humane Society (WI) or the Humane Society of South Coastal Georgia in lieu of flowers.
You are so, so missed, sweet Barbie. This world is a little dimmer without your light.
