A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many, Barbara Morgan Reed died peacefully at home on Thursday, October 1, 2015. Barbara was born on February 27, 1929, in Pensacola, FL, to the late William and Molly Boyden. Her son, William Thomas Morgan, and her husband of 40 years, Thomas Gillis Morgan, Jr., also preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband of 21 years, Vernon Lawrence Reed; son Thomas Gillis Morgan, III (Judi), all of SSI; and grandchildren, Molly Morgan Hammond (Mike), of Monterey, CA; and William Thomas Morgan II (Laura), of Atlanta.
Barbara graduated from Florida State University, where she majored in English and was a member and president of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. She loved her sorority life with a passion because, as an only child, she was happy to finally have “sisters.” She was especially proud when her granddaughter, Molly, pledged Theta at Vanderbilt University.
An Episcopalian and long-time member of Christ Church, Frederica, on SSI, Barbara chaired and served on numerous committees there. She also supported the Episcopal charitable organization Compass Rose, started by the Archbishop of Canterbury. Both Gold Life Master Duplicate Bridge players, Barbara and Vernon were instrumental in fundraising for the Golden Isles Duplicate Bridge Club building. Also important to Barbara was her membership in the Cherokee Garden Club, where she was elected president twice. The Cotillion social club and the Kappa Alpha Theta alumnae association also brought her much joy. Barbara enjoyed travel throughout her life and especially enjoyed cruises with Vernon in more recent years.
There will be a funeral service at Christ Church, Frederica, on Tuesday, October 6, at 11am, followed by a reception in the Parish House. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of the Golden Isles (1692 Glynco Parkway, Brunswick, GA 31525) or Christ Church, Frederica (6329 Frederica Rd., SSI, GA 31522). The family would also like to extend gratitude to Barbara’s caregivers from BrightStar of Coastal Georgia; Hospice of the Golden Isles; and Louise Penzo. Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
