

Carl was born on March 15, 1935, in Scranton, PA to the late Louise and Harold Harris. He later moved to Westport, CT where he grew up and graduated from Staples High School. He was accepted to Yale University, but received a musical scholarship from and attended Oberlin College in Ohio, and received a graduate degree from the National School of Finance and Management at Fairfield University in CT. Carl, an avid baseball fan, was chosen to try out for the NY Yankees, served in the US Navy, and a 1st violinist for both the Connecticut and Norwalk Symphony Orchestras.
During his 39 year banking career, Carl started our nation's first women’s business center in 1995 (The People’s Bank Woman’s Business Center) to address the special needs of women entrepreneurs. This center received recognition from the United Nations, resulting in Carl's selection to the Board of Directors of the US Committee for UNIFEM. He received many awards, including the prestigious US small business award for Regional Financial Services Advocate for two years. During his retirement , he continued to serve the local community as president of the Optimist Club of Saint Simons Island, GA.
While Carl had varied accomplishments and received many awards, he was most proud of his family. Carl is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years: Nicole Harris of St. Simons Island; two sons: Stephen H. (Jennifer) Harris of Charlotte, NC and Michael (Lorena) Harris of St. Simons Island; five grandchildren: Rebecca Harris of St. Simons Island; Noelle and Matthew Harris of Charlotte, NC, Ryan and Michael Harris of St. Simons Island; one sister: Judy (Herb) Frederick of St. Simons Island; and one brother: Bruce (EvieAnn) Harris of Atlanta, GA. He was greatly loved, will be dearly missed, and always remembered.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home with Msgr. John Keneally officiating. Interment will follow at Palmetto Cemetery. The family will receive friends and family Tuesday, October 25, 2011 from 6-8 p.m. at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home.
