

Dan was born in Ashland, Alabama, to the late Daniel Zero Cotney Sr. and Mae Belle H. Cotney. He moved to Brunswick, Georgia, in 1946 with his mother and stepfather, Albert Danner.
Dan was a graduate of Glynn Academy Class of 1949. Following graduation, he joined the New Air National Guard in 1950 and was a charter member of the 129th Squadron, which was mobilized for active duty on January 8, 1951, reporting to Seward Air Force Base in Tennessee.
Dan joined the work force at age 16, his first job was as a curb-hop at the popular Creamland Drive-in. He also worked at McCoskers and Tracy’s Auto Parts. Dan was most recognized from his roles as credit manager and furniture sales at both Rhodes Furniture and H & H Service Store until his retirement.
Dan enjoyed his 76 years as a resident of Glynn County. He was an avid bowler and bowled in multiple leagues from the first year the Bowlarena was built. He served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Golden Isles Bowling Association for 20 plus years and two terms as president. He was also Vice President of the Georgia State Bowling Association. Dan was a charter member of the Brunswick Civitan club and served as Secretary-Treasurer. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, Alabama football, and researching family genealogy. Dan was an excellent gardener and grew the best tomatoes in Glynn County! He did his best to pass on his skills of canning and preserving food to his family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Virginia Carol Danner Sizemore (Tom) and daughter, Anita Cotney Jones.
Dan is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Marian Long Cotney and three daughters, Andrea C. Kennison (David), Naples, FL; Robin Allen Peters (Tony), Milledgeville, GA; Janet Allen Garris (Tim), Brunswick. Grandchildren: Elizabeth Ann “Beth” Sellers Holt (Bobby), St. Augustine, FL; Misty Lynn Grantham, Brunswick; Shelby Elizabeth Jones Miller (Luke), Hillsboro, OR; Alexandria Elizabeth Lang, New York City, NY; Anthony Eugene Peters Jr, Germantown, MD; Benjamin Allen Peters, Auburn, AL, and Six Great-grandchildren (Michael, Dalton, Hunter, Khloe, Luna, and Skyla).
Surviving siblings include Mae “Loucile” Cotney Stepp (Doyle) and Jack S. Cotney, Brunswick GA and Leonard L. Danner, Ashland AL. several nieces and nephews.
Dan thoroughly enjoyed membership at the Jekyll Island Baptist Chapel and valued time spent with his church family.
A Memorial service to honor Dan’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 11, 2022, at Jekyll Island Baptist Chapel with The Reverend Jim Crandall officiating. Family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service. A private interment will follow.
