Gene is also survived by his dear friends and neighbors on St. Simons Island and at the Island Health Club.
Gene was a loyal Ohio State Buckeyes fan as well as a golf enthusiast. He was one of the first ticket holders to the Memorial Golf Tournament in Dublin Ohio, and he travelled to Ohio for many years to go to the tournament and to see his family there.
Gene was a season pass holder at the Island putt-putt course, where he took his game and personal statistics very seriously.
Gene loved his family, his country, and his home on St. Simons Island. He never wanted to inconvenience anyone, and he enjoyed his privacy as well as his independence.
Gene, an avid reader, was a huge John Grisham fan. He especially liked books that championed those who were oppressed or were victimized by people who held power and were deceitful and arrogant.
Gene especially liked the book “The Shack”, a 2007 novel that was written by William P. Young, a Canadian author. The story was about a man who lost his little girl to a tragic abduction and murder. He blamed himself for not being there to protect her. For some reason Gene identified with this man especially and shared the man’s feelings in what was referred to in the book as “the great sadness”. Gene also enjoyed the spiritual and fantastic way the man conquered his sadness and finally gained peace in his life. This said a lot about Gene’s experiences in his own life. Somewhere along the road he felt a great loss and had to overcome it. This influenced his lifetime wishes of peace for his family and loved ones.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 on June 19th, 2021 at the Wesley United Methodist Church at Frederica in St. Simons Island. Gene’s interment will occur in the Wesley Columbarium with his beloved sisters and nephew.
