

Ezra William Merritt, 81, of Brunswick died, Saturday, October 02, 2010 at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, October 5, 2010 in the chapel of Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home with Pastor Ronnie Clark officiating. Entombment will follow in Palmetto Cemetery with Dale Merritt, Aaron Brown, Keith Shead, Jack Farabee, Jack Guest and Benny Carter serving as pallbearers.
Born July 16, 1929 in Wayne County, Georgia to the late Rufus Dixon and Evie Ford Merritt, he was the owner and operator of Merritt and Son Construction. At the age of 11 Mr. Merritt came to Brunswick where he worked at various sawmills in Camden, Brantley and Glynn County. In 1949 he married Frances Beasley and together they raised three children, Freddy, Sherry and Ronnie. Mr. Merritt was a former member of the Army National Guard and from 1955 – 1956 he was a member of the Glynn County Police Department. In 1959 he started a small land construction company with one dump truck and a shovel, that eventually became E.W. Merritt Construction Company. In 1992 he changed the name to Merritt and Son Construction. Mr. Merritt also raised three canine companions, Jake, Bear and Renie, and they became an integral part of his life. Mr. Merritt attended Sterling Church of God. He enjoyed life and lived it to the fullest and “did it his way”. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Sue Harrell Merritt, four sisters and two brothers.
Survivors include two sons, Freddy Merritt and wife Donna of Brunswick and Ronnie Merritt of Olive Branch, MS, a daughter Sherry Merritt of Brunswick, grandchildren, Dale Merritt and wife Wendy, Christy Brown and husband Aaron, Keith Shead, Amy Ruiz and husband Frank, and Kris Shead and wife Dana, four beloved great grandchildren, Mathew, Elizabeth, MaKenzie and Caiden , a brother, Fred Merritt of southern, CA, a special friend and caretaker, Linda Powell, along with several nieces and nephews.
