
Florence Barber Dismukes, 99, of Asheville, NC, formerly of St. Simons Island, GA died peacefully in her sleep on Friday, May 4, 2012. Graveside Services will be held at 10 AM Friday May 11, 2012 at Christ Church Frederica Cemetery.
Mrs. Dismukes was born and raised in Moultrie GA serving as a manager of the 1928 Moultrie Packers State Champion football team. She graduated from Shorter College in Rome, Georgia with a degree in Biology.
Following her graduation, she married Arthur Forman Dismukes of Columbus, GA. They shared 59 years together until his death in 1993. They were the parents of three children, Arthur Forman Dismukes, Jr., (Beverly) who predeceased her in 2010, Anne Elizabeth Dismukes Shepard of Portmouth, NH and Paul Fitzgerald Dismukes (Chris) of Asheville, NC. She had four grandchildren, Morrissette Shepard Killian (Glenn), Sarah Shepard Mobius, Blair Forman Dismukes who predeceased her in 2005 and Elizabeth Parmelee Dismukes. She also had two great-grandsons, Logan Arthur and Bradley Forman Killian.
Mrs. Dismukes raised her children in Columbus, Georgia where she devoted much of her time to civic and charitable organizations most notably the National Society of the Colonial Dames in the State of Georgia, the Junior League of Columbus and the Cape Jasmine Garden Club. During World War II, she served as a Red Cross Volunteer at Fort Benning, Georgia and spoke fondly of the many skills she learned including how to disassemble and reassemble a Jeep engine. She loved to entertain and was well known for her annual Georgia-Auburn party.
Following her husband's retirement, Mrs. Dismukes moved to south Florida where she continued her volunteer work with the Junior League of the Palm Beaches. In 1976, they moved to Saint Simons Island, Ga where she and her husband enjoyed their remaining years together. She loved to travel and took many trips with her husband and daughter culminating with a portion of the Millenneal World Cruise aboard the Queen Elizabeth II in 2000. She was a communicant at Christ Church, Frederica for 35 years and served as an active member of the Charles Wesley Guild. She continued her lifelong interest in learning as a member of the Saint Simons Island Study Club with many of her friends. Over the years, they discussed the lives of countless important historic figures such as General George Patton and Thomas Chippendale. Mrs. Dismukes was also acutely interested in genealogy and was proud to be a lifetime member of the Huguenot Society of South Carolina.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial to the National Society of the Colonial Dames in the State of Georgia, 329 Abercorn Street, Savannah Georgia 31401 or to the Christ Church, Frederica Cemetery Fund, 6329 Frederica Rd, Saint Simons Island, GA 31522.
