He was born May 21, 1928, in Darby, PA., son of Clifford Kennedy Eckerd and Edith Armstrong. He grew up in the surrounding area of Philadelphia along with his two brothers and his sister.
George served his country honorably in the US Navy for 30 years as a Naval Aviator attaining the rank of Commander. He then worked for another 20 years with the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center and the University of Georgia Small Business Development Center in Brunswick GA.
He and his wife of 74 years, Mary Massa Eckerd, retired to Walker County, Georgia where they enjoyed the country life. They had recently returned to St. Simons Island, GA from Walker County.
He is survived by his wife Mary, and six children – Leslie, George, Jr., Bill, Jane, Betsy and Stephen, as well as their 18 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.
George will be remembered for his quick wit, his accomplished woodworking skills, and the deep, abiding love he had for his wife and family.
