Gerry was born May 28, 1947, in Brunswick, GA. She died March 27, 2026. Gerry was the daughter of Damon L. and Rose Hendrix McKenzie. She was a lifelong resident of Glynn County and resided on St Simons. She loved the Island and the sense of community that it afforded. She graduated from Glynn Academy and was active in student life as well being a member of the Pirates of the Spanish Main. She became a mentor for this group for many years.
After high school she attended Georgia southern university where she was a member of Phi Mu sorority. She graduated with a BS Ed, an MS Ed, and finally a specialist degree. Her entire career was spent working for Glynn County Public Schools. From teacher to administrator her advocacy for Glynn County Public Schools was widely known.
Retirement brought many happy times. She enjoyed traveling. she spent countless hours working with various charities, including the Katz-Whittle Foundation and Morningstar.
She was also involved with her church, St Simons United Methodist, where she was a Stephen Minister. She also loved being with friends and family.
Gerry is survived by her sister Karen Lewis, who became her biggest advocate, her brother-in-law, Don Lewis, who was always there for her, another sister Judy Milwee who will miss her forever, and her niece, Madison Lewis, who was the light of her life.
We must not forget her little companion, Sally, who was by side her side throughout.
Gerry was a big presence in a tiny package, and a big hole was left when she died. She loved her family, her church, and her many friends. Sweet Mamas and Barbara Jeans will not be the same.
Her life had great meaning and her advice to all of us would be to live our lives to the fullest.
