Mr. Meadows was born on June 11, 1920, in Richwood, New Jersey, the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Brown Meadows. He was a graduate of Glassboro State Teachers College, NJ, (now Rowan University) and a three and a half year veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy on the USS Essex from January 1943–April 1946. He was eventually stationed at the Naval Radar Training School on St. Simons and, as a result, became a permanent resident of Glynn County.
He co-founded Sea Pak Corporation in 1948. After 20 years of serving as the company’s vice president, he launched a new career in land development and building construction. His development work spanned many years and included The Meadows on St. Simons, Windward Acres, and Peppertree Crossing. He worked full time until he was 86 years old.
Mr. Meadows was an active participant in the St. Simons United Methodist Church since 1948 and officially joined the church in 1955. He sang in the chancel choir from the beginning and assumed various leadership roles including chairman of the Long Range Planning Committee and overseer of the construction of the new sanctuary, dedicated in 1981. Along with his wife, Barbara, he established the Meadows Chicken Dinners, which supported Boy Scout Troop 248 as well as many other church and community ministries. He was also the chair of the Boy Scout committee at the church.
His life passions were his wife, “Shug,” his children and grandchildren, cultivation of flowers and creative landscapes, and family gatherings, wherever and whenever they could occur.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Barbara Thompson Meadows, and three children: John Thomas Meadows (Kim) of St. Simons Island, Lynn Meadows-White (Howard) of Columbus, GA, and Cynthia Meadows Kopotic of Brunswick; seven grandchildren: Ashley, Thomas, and Joshua Meadows, St. Simons Island; Elizabeth and John Howard White, Columbus, GA; Grace and Jacob Boatright, Brunswick; sister-in-law Janice Meadows, Pitman, NJ; and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Milton Meadows, and a sister and brother-in-law, Mae and Ken Turk.
