

Joseph Hendrix, 86, of Jekyll Island, Georgia, passed away January 27, 2016. He was born in Winokur, Georgia on March 18, 1929. He received an Associate Degree in Business Management and Accounting from Perry Business School in Brunswick, Georgia.
He was married to Eunice Claire Thomas on November 22nd, 1953 and they were married for more than 45 years when she preceded him in death in July 1999. He served in the U.S. Army at Fort Jackson in Columbia, SC. He then worked full time for Georgia Power and on the weekends part-time for the Novelty Shoe Store in Brunswick, Georgia prior purchasing Dorsey’s Shoe Store and Repair. This launched his 43 years as a local business owner of Hendrix Shoe Stores and Repair, owning up to five stores at one time. These were full service family shoe stores that included shoe sales and repair, fitting of orthopedic shoes and filling prescriptions from doctors. He fully retired in 2002 at the age of 73. He had a passion for his family and the ocean. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Brunswick, Ocean Lodge 214,
The Brunswick Elks Club and the Lyons Club.
He was a pillar of the community and will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, Joe Hendrix and Victoria (Crews) Hendrix; his siblings, Florence (Hendrix) Snoozy, Jesse Ward (Bud) Hendrix, Estelle (Hendrix) Harris, and Robert Hendrix, and son-in-law, David Franklin Shepard. He was survived by his children, Vicki Hendrix Shepard of Tazewell, VA, and Joseph Thomas Hendrix and his wife, Kimberly (Hawkinson) Hendrix of Lynn Haven, FL; grandchildren Josie Shepard Allison and her husband William C. Allison II, Joseph Glenn Shepard and his wife Crystal (Lynch) Shepard, Emily Hawkinson, Madison Hendrix, and William Hendrix; his great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Jamie, Tiffany, Alex, James, Thomas, Isabella, Jasmine, and Gracie; and great-great-children Kaybrie, Colton and Paityn. His surviving siblings are Juanita (Hendrix) Bensen, Helen (Hendrix) Johns and her husband James Johns, and McDonald Hendrix and many nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Joseph T. Hendrix, James P. Vanhoozer, William C. Allison II, David A. Miles, Jack Price Jr. and Dennis Krakowski.
Honorary Pallbearers are Dr. Lana Skelton, Dr. Stephen Chitty, Dr. Enrique Fernandez, Dr. Steven Williams and Dr. Robert H. Thompson. Furthermore, the family would like to thank the nursing staff and rapid response team of the Critical Care Unit of Southeast Georgia Health System in Brunwsick, GA for their passion, empathy and support through our difficult time.
A visitation will be held from 6-8pm on Saturday, Jan 30, 2016 at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home in Brunswick, GA. The funeral service will be held at 2:00pm, Sunday, January 31, 2016 in the chapel at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home followed by a procession to the burial at Jesup City Cemetery in Jesup, Georgia.
