Joe was born in Taos, New Mexico, to Louis and Adela Santistevan Martinez. He graduated from Raton High School in Raton, NM then joined the US Navy. After serving our country, Joe moved to Glynn County and worked at Brunswick Pulp and Paper until his retirement. He was a life-long member of the PACE Union and of the Catholic faith.
Joe loved his family. He took on the responsibility of being a father and papa to his brother’s daughter, Tanya and her daughter, Isabelle. He was very proud to be “Poppa Joe”. Joe loved socializing and would talk sports and politics to anyone who would listen. He often said there was “nothing better than a cold beer on a warm, sunny day”. Joe was an avid golfer who played daily at one of the many golf clubs in our area, always walking the course. Many times, he was accompanied by his two dogs, Weiner and Mimi. Joe loved animals, especially his dogs and his cat, Crazy Guy. He enjoyed saltwater fishing and was an amazing whittler. He enjoyed watching tennis and football on television, always cheering on GA Tech. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Thomas and sister-in-law, Elsie Martinez.
He is survived by his “adopted” daughter and granddaughter, Tanya Martinez-Pearce (Lamar) and her daughter, Isabelle Grayce Martinez-Amos; a sister, Dora Weaver (Thomas); several nieces and nephews and their children, Kathleen Pippin (Robert), Scott Pippin (Jacqueline), Diane Pippin Worley, Christa Pippin Wickland, Denise Witte (Wes), Claire Witte, Joseph Witte (Caety), Thomas B. Weaver (Janet), Dillion Weaver and Morgan Weaver.
A gathering to celebrate Joe’s life will be held on Wednesday, March 4, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Humane Society of South Coastal Georgia, 4627 US Hwy 17, Brunswick, GA 31520 https://hsscg.org/
