Katie was born in 1923 near Oak Park, Georgia, where she spent her early years growing up during the Great Depression—an era she fondly referred to as the “Hoover Days.” She often shared stories of her childhood, recalling a time when her family relied on mule-drawn wagons for transportation and used lantern light to complete daily tasks before electricity and automobiles became part of their lives. In the fall of 1940, she moved to Brunswick, where she would build her life and raise her family.
During World War II, Katie contributed to the war effort by working at the J.A. Jones Shipyard in Brunswick, helping build Liberty Ships. She trained briefly as a welder alongside her late husband before working as a cashier in the shipyard cafeteria. After the war, she worked at the Lewis Crab Factory before dedicating herself fully to raising her four children as a devoted stay-at-home mother.
Katie was a woman of deep faith who lived by strong biblical values. She taught Sunday School at Norwich Street Church of God and remained active throughout her life. She found joy in crocheting, gardening, and tending to her yard, often enjoying the fruits of her labor from her persimmon and citrus trees, as well as homegrown watermelons.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Magdalene Dowd; her father, Meady Madison Collins; her beloved husband, James Howard Selph; and all of her brothers and sisters.
Katie is survived by her loving children: Samuel (Victoria) Selph, Daniel (Susan) Selph, David (Leticia) Selph, and Sarah Rider (Randy Link); six grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren, all of whom carry forward her legacy of love, strength, and faith.
In December of 2023, Katie celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by family and friends at New Life Sanctuary in Brunswick. In honor of her admiration for Princess Diana and Queen Elizabeth, her family crowned her “queen for the day” with a tiara, a fitting tribute to a woman who reigned in the hearts of all who knew her.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to her special friend and caregiver, Annette Coulson, and to the compassionate staff of Hospice of the Golden Isles for their care and support.
Katie Selph’s long and meaningful life was a testament to faith, resilience, and love. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
